The self-employed in the Province of Liège represent 20% of the working population in the province, 30.2% in Wallonia and 8.9% in Belgium. Two fifths of the self-employed in the province are shopkeepers and one fifth engaged in professional occupations.

Unemployment remains a particularly acute problem in the Province of Liège. The unemployment rate, though slightly below the regional average (17.3%), is markedly higher than the national average (11.8%), standing at 17% on 30 June 1998. Nevertheless, the number of job-seekers on unemployment benefit has been falling slightly since 1996 and is currently 75,207 people.
