A small number of large concerns still employ a sizeable segment of the workforce in the province. More than a fifth of the jobs are in establishments employing more than 500 persons. The sectors to which these high levels of concentration apply are the metal-extracting and first-processing industries, and the mechanical engineering and metalworking industries.

The number of concerns dropped steadily until the mid 1980s. This trend has been reversed in recent years, however, and in 1987 the number of concerns amounted to 23500 units.

Since 1988, the most significant growth has been seen in the commerce, banking, insurance and business services sectors, in terms of both jobs and new companies created.
